September 2011 - Focus on the EGDMS partner from Slovenia, the Slovenian Instructors Association - Centre for Guide Dogs and Assistance Dogs (SLO-CANIS)

In Slovenia until recently, the role and importance of guide dogs were not well recognised. Something changed this year, when the association SLO-CANIS gained the status of Humanitarian Organisation, awarded by the Slovenian Ministry of Health. In addition, the Slovenian Ministry of Home, Family and Social Affairs officially acknowledged the impressive work done by the association. We all hope that this new status will give SLO-CANIS the energy to keep working hard for the benefit of their users.

The SLO-CANIS team knows that there is still a long way to go before guide dogs become a standard support for disabled people in Slovenia. However, with limited means they already trained 12 dogs since 2006! Through the EGDMS project and another European project they were recently awarded, SLO-CANIS is willing to accelerate its development in order to achieve more in the future.

Below you will see some photos of the SLO-CANIS users, professionals and dogs, illustrating their work and commitment.
